Exploring Alentejo’s Hidden Treasures: A Mother-Son Adventure

As the sun arised we took a conforting breakfast in Herdade Amália, located in Odeceixe in my favourite place to vacations in Portugal, Alentejo. This was my last vacations with my 18 year old soon, it was september, 2022. This trip was not just about relaxation and leisure; it was about to enjoy the last year in which I would spend so much time with my son, because after reaching adulthood, we mothers know that other horizons open up for our children, and all time counts.

Discovering the Unknown: The property manager told us that near us there was a pristine, untouched beach and we must have to discover. However, to reach this secluded spot, we had to navigate through rugged terrain. The narrow paths along the beach were flanked by dense vegetation, almost like an untouched forest. As we set forth, we could sense the thrill of the unknown.

A Hiccup Along the Way: As we ventured deeper into the forest, we encountered a challenge that added an unexpected twist to our journey. My son, ever the enthusiast, had opted for beach slippers, which proved to be a less-than-ideal choice for the muddy and uneven terrain. With each step, we could feel the mud squish beneath our feet, threatening to claim our slippers.

Facing the Unknown: As we continued along the path, the vegetation grew denser and the feeling of isolation became more pronounced. The unfamiliar surroundings and the realization that we were far from the beaten track brought a tinge of trepidation. Yet, it was precisely this fear of the unknown that made our adventure all the more exhilarating.

The Decision: Despite our curiosity and determination to reach the untouched beach, we eventually made a difficult decision. The discomfort of mud-filled slippers and the uncertainty of what lay ahead led us to reevaluate our course. It was not an easy choice, but sometimes, in the face of uncertainty, discretion is the better part.

Lessons from the Journey: Our adventure at Alentejo’s Herdade Amália taught us valuable lessons. We discovered that sometimes, the journey itself is more important than the destination. Embracing the unexpected can lead to unforgettable experiences, even if it means abandoning one path to explore another. Most importantly, we learned that the bond between a mother and her son can withstand any challenge, no matter how muddy or uncertain the path may be.

Our trip to Alentejo was not just a vacation; it was an adventure that strengthened our connection and left us with memories that we will cherish forever. As we left the dense vegetation behind and returned to more familiar surroundings, we knew that our journey had been about more than just reaching a destination. It had been about exploring the unknown together, and in doing so, we had created an indelible bond that would last a lifetime.
